Why I Wrote Baekjeol Bulgul — Unbroken
Every story has a beginning. But sometimes, the beginning isn't where you think it is.
Baekjeol Bulgul — Unbroken didn't start with Captain Solomon Briggs. It didn't start with North Korea, or the extraction mission, or the betrayal seeded inside American intelligence. It started with a question I couldn't stop asking myself while developing a completely different story — one that isn't out yet.
That story is called Flight 467.
Without giving too much away, Flight 467 operates in a world where power doesn't belong to presidents, generals, or elected officials. It belongs to something older. Something quieter. Something that has no flag and answers to no government — and has been pulling strings longer than most people would believe possible.
As I developed that story, I kept arriving at the same problem. The world Flight 467 lives in needed to already exist before page one. The institutions, the reach, the methods — none of it would land with the weight it deserved if readers were meeting it cold.
Baekjeol Bulgul is the answer to that problem.
It is a story that stands completely on its own — a covert thriller about loyalty, betrayal, and survival at the highest levels of intelligence and power. But underneath the mission, underneath the deception, something else is being built. A foundation. A shadow.
There is an institution in this story called The Nona.
I won't tell you much about them. Not yet. But pay attention to how they move. Pay attention to what they want — and more importantly, what they're willing to do to get it.
Because when Flight 467 arrives, you'll understand things other readers won't.
That's the gift I wanted to give the people who show up early.
